A huge source of undesired feeling these days is VUCA, which creates rigidity in our bodies when we resist or try to ignore it.

VUCA what?!

VUCA is a term coined by the US military to describe battlefield conditions soldiers have to face. VUCA stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. Needless to say, you don’t need to be on a battlefield to experience VUCA as an everyday reality, especially these days. But our culture teaches us to be at war with VUCA, extolling us to make it go away by replacing it with its opposites of Stability, Certainty, Simplicity and Clarity.

But resisting VUCA is like trying to resist breathing. You can only do it so long before you have to accept it’s a fact of life. And part of that is accepting VUCA can be darn uncomfortable. No wonder we want to block it out. So we tense up to try to not notice it, and as we do, our performance suffers.

And in this pandemic world, you don’t have to look to far to see there’s a lot of VUCA. COVID has thrown everybody into unknown VUCA-rich territory, with heightened awareness of uncertainty, with no clear road ahead provoking a loss of control, making trusted ways of navigating change no longer relevant.

As the COVID world continues to unfold, the more you try to block out and avoid VUCA the more of it shows up. Resulting in a tense nervous system leading to more than just tense muscles.
